The Rock Pool Project is a not-for-profit community interest company that offers an inspiring and educational experience to people of all ages. It takes groups out into different spots across the beautiful Cornish coastline and introduces attendees to the hidden life under the water that is revealed as the tide ebbs and flows.
The Rock Pool Project works with schools to take kids out for these educational beach days and it can also even bring the beach days to the school with their mobile rock pool. They are also able to offer an interactive virtual rock pool so that attendees from around the world can share the experience!
Dr Ben Holt, owner of the The Rockpool Project, participated in three of the Innovation in the Wild sessions, even hosting one at his business.
Ben thought that the concept of the Innovation in the Wild events was really good and that having an activity can get attendees to relax and participate more fully.
The Rockpooling session of Innovation in the Wild that Ben hosted took place on Tunnel Beach in Falmouth and offered an interesting and relaxing activity for attendees to get stuck into. This different tempo in a refreshing environment creates a fun event that is also good for wellbeing.
“I’ve been to a lot of networking but haven’t had this element of activities before”.
As well as hosting the Rockpooling session, Ben has attended Net-walking events including a session on the picturesque Roseland Peninsula. It was however the trip to the Wave that was the real showstopper for Ben.
“The best one was the trip to the Wave, the payoff for going to that was having this shared experience.
The atmosphere for the event was top class and you guys did a brilliant job organising. Having an overnight trip with everyone trying out such an amazing new experience really helped us to get to know each other and will definitely help massively if we want to follow up on the connections that we have made.”
As a result of the sessions, Ben felt like he gained a lot of useful information that he could take back and implement in his business. One such takeaway that came from networking was updating the digital security systems for his business. Additionally valuable conversations about accessibility in events were had that has led to an ongoing relationship with other partners.
Overall, Ben enjoyed the style of event and the clarity that getting out for a day or two can bring.
“It was also a great break from the regular stresses of running an organisation, which is always useful.”
In addition to the Innovation in the Wild series, Ben has appreciated the contributions from the Future Focus project over the years.
“There’s a diverse range of things on offer, it’s a niche project with academic links at the University of Exeter as well as business support for businesses in the local area”
Ben has particularly appreciated the targeted support for local businesses as well as the opportunity to hear from other business leaders and gain their input and perspectives.
