Cornwall Holiday Cottages is a family run holiday home agency based in Mawnan Smith. Running for over forty years, the businesses offers properties to guests looking for holiday homes in Falmouth and along the Helford River. In addition to their business operations, they also support the Children’s Sailing Trust and other charitable initiatives.
Emily found that the Innovation in the Wild session really stuck in her mind and was the highlight of all the Future Focus support received, despite some really good other sessions attended. She found that her best thinking was done when walking and would love to see more outdoor based business events in the future.
This two day session included a walk over Dartmoor, evening innovation workshop and an overnight stay in a hotel.
“The team was brilliant, Hollie, Steve and Allen were just incredible. The hotel we stayed at was slightly extraordinary in a lovely location. The evening workshop led by Allen was on innovation and as a small business owner it can be really hard to access the time to get out of the everyday and be inspired to innovate but having the time away was really useful. These events give you a renewed energy and passion for what you’re doing which goes back to the team as well and leads to more profitability.”
The smaller group in this session made discussion more in depth and allowed more meaningful networking to take place and this led to renewed motivation for Cornish Holiday Cottages to attain B-Corp status.
In addition to the memorable Innovation in the Wild event, Emily has attended the Tourism Business Breakfast series. These have been really valuable to Emily as they brought her to other business leaders who she would not normally meet in her day to day.
“Being able to step out of the business for a day and get expertise from people like Professor Allen Alexander and his team is amazing. It is like a holiday or a retreat but for your business!”
The business has also received graduate job support as well as receiving a piece of research into sustainability. This research is currently being acted upon within the business and Emily was grateful for the expertise from the University of Exeter’s Business School that put it together.
“Really appreciated the research done through the project on sustainability. Lovely to have the business school involved, there is so much expertise within the organisation”
Since the Innovation in the Wild event, Cornish Holiday Cottages has been busy focussing on becoming a B-Corp, as well as concentrating on their charitable contributions towards the community. For example, in addition to their tree planting initiative in the rainforest, they have developed a new local one called Plant One Cornwall which plants trees within the county. Finally, as a result of all the support received from Future Focus over the course of the project, including coaching, owner Emily is now sharing her knowledge with others and supporting others with what she has learnt.
